1 Piece Baby Sweater                                                




This baby sweater pattern would yield a wide sleeved sweater as shown in the picture. It has been intentionally designed that way, as the baby should have enough room to sway her arms inside the sleeves. The pattern can be further enhanced by adding different colored stripes or varying edge by substituting garter stitch with some other stitch.


Size: newborn, 3 months, 6 months


Chest: 16, 22, 24 inches


Materials and Gauge:

For newborns: One 50g ball fingering yarn Bernat Baby. Needles US#4. Gauge - 6 to 7 stitches x  9 rows per inch.


For 3 months: One 120g ball dk sports yarn Bernat Softee Baby or Red Heart Soft baby. Needles US#6. Gauge - 5 to 6 stitches x 7 rows per inch.


For 6 months: Two 85g balls worsted yarn  Bernat Cottontots or Caron Simply Soft or Red Heart Supersaver. Needles US#7. Gauge - 4 to 5 stitches x 7 rows per inch.



Back Side:

Cast on 48 stitches.

Row 1-8: Knit (Garter Stitch)

Row 9-30: Knit, Purl, Knit, Purl(Stockinette Stitch) continue till row 30.


Sleeve Shaping(for back):

Rows 31,33,35,37,39,41,43,45,47,49 RS(Right Side) rows:

(Knit 1 stitch, increase 1 stitch) twice. Knit all stitches plain till last 3 stitches remain on the needle, (Knit 1 stitch, increase 1 stitch) twice and end the row. This way continue increasing 4 stitches on each RS row till you have total of 88 stitches.

Rows 32,34,36,38,40,42,44,46,48,50 WS(Wrong Side): Purl.

Row 51-76: Purl, Knit,Purl (Stockinette Stitch) continue till row 76.


Neck shaping:

Row 77: Knit all stitches.

Row 78: Purl 32 stitches, Knit 24 stitches(for neck), Purl 32 stitches.

Row 79: Knit all stitches.

Row 80: Purl 32 stitches, Knit 24 stitches, Purl 32 stitches.

Row 81: Knit 32 stitches, Cast off 24 stitches, Knit 32 stitches.


The Great divide:

Front Side:

Row 82: Leave first 32 stitches on a stitch holder for  the right front. Knit 4 stitches(for edge), Purl remaining 28 stitches that constitutes the left front.

Row 83: Knit.

Row 84: Knit 4 stitches, Purl remaining 28 stitches.

Row 85: Knit.

Row 86: Knit 4 stitches, Purl remaining 28 stitches.

Row 87: Knit.

Row 88: Knit 4 stitches, Purl remaining 28 stitches.

Rows 89,91,93,95,97,99,101,103,105,107,109: Knit 4 stitches. Increase 1 stitch at neck edge on RS rows. This way continue increasing 1 stitch at every RS row on neck edge till there are 43 stitches.

Rows 90,92,94,96,98,100,102,104,106,108,110: Purl.

Sleeve shaping

Row 111,113,115,117,119,121,123,125,127,129: (Knit 1 stitch, decrease 1 stitch) twice. Knit remaining stitches. Make button holes on neck edge  when last 3 stitches remain on row 111 and 129 by doing YO,K2tog,K1.

Row 112,114,116,118,120,122,124,126,128,130: Purl till last 4 stitches remain. Knit last 4 stitches for neck edge.

Row 131,133,135,137,139,141,143,145,147,149,151: Knit .On 141th row make a buttonhole.

Row 132,134,136,138,140,142,144,146,148,150,152: Knit 4 stitches. Purl the rest.

Row 153-160: Knit (Garter Stitch).Cast off.

For the right front shift 32 stitches from the stitch holder on to your needles.

Work right front as above to match the left front without the buttonholes.


Sleeve Bands:

With right side of work facing pick up 38 stitches along the sleeve edge. Knit 1 row. Next row K2,Ktogether across, end kt2.Work 5 more rows in garter stitch and cast off.


To Make Up:

Assemble  and  with right side of knitting facing, sew up the sleeves and side seams .Sew on the buttons.
